Rituals and Spells of Santeria
Each orisha, or saint, is associated with a natural force as well as a specific human pursuit or concern. For example, Chango is the deity of fire, thunder, and lightning, symbolizing justice and offering protection to his followers from adversaries. He also represents passion and virility, frequently called upon in matters of seduction. Oshun embodies river waters, love, and marriage, serving as the quintessential symbol of joy and pleasure. Yemaya is connected to the seven seas and motherhood, providing protection to women in their endeavors. Eleggua governs crossroads, change, and destiny, determining what is possible or impossible and representing balance. Obatala acts as the paternal figure, symbolizing peace and purity. Oya commands the winds and presides over the cemetery, watching over the threshold between life and death—she embodies an awareness of mortality rather than death itself. Oggun is the protector of all metalworkers, safeguarding farmers, carpenters, butchers, surgeons, mechanics, and others who work with metals, while also overseeing accidents, which he may instigate.
