Andalusite Raw Specimen 1

Andalusite is an aluminium silicate mineral that forms naturally during the metamorphism of clay-rich rocks under high temperatures and pressures. It is named after Andalusia in Spain, although the first specimens were later found to have originated elsewhere. Well-formed crystals are found in countries including Brazil, Spain, Sri Lanka, Australia and the USA.

One of andalusite's most distinctive features is its strong pleochroism—it can display different colours depending on the viewing angle, often shifting between green, brown, gold, olive and reddish tones. Some specimens contain dark carbon inclusions that form a natural cross pattern, known as chiastolite, a well-known variety of andalusite.
